Our History
Courtis, Desmoulin Law Office has a proud tradition of representing Aboriginal clients in Thunder Bay, throughout Northwestern Ontario and in many other regions across Canada.
Under the Indian Residential School Settlement Agreement (IRSSA), the lawyers at Courtis, Desmoulin Law Office have assisted hundreds of Indian Residential School (IRS) Survivors residing throughout Canada and parts of the United States to obtain compensation for the physical and sexual abuse they suffered and the consequential impacts of such abuse.
Prior to the IRSSA being reached between IRS Survivors and the Government of Canada, Richard Courtis, the founder of Courtis, Desmoulin Law Office, was co-counsel of record in the Baxter national class action which advanced claims on behalf of IRS Survivors and their family members for the loss of language and culture, and emotional, psychological, physical and sexual abuse. Prior to the Baxter class action, Mr. Courtis represented numerous Aboriginal clients with respect to physical and sexual abuse suffered in Training Schools.
What we do
In addition to completing some remaining claims for IRS Survivors, our lawyers represent numerous Aboriginal clients in Thunder Bay and throughout Northwestern Ontario in criminal and personal injury matters. Our lawyers regularly attend court in First Nations fly-in communities. Having assisted members of the Aboriginal community for decades, the lawyers of Courtis, Desmoulin are attuned to the realities faced by many Aboriginal people are therefore well-suited to provide our Aboriginal clients with the personalized service they both need and deserve.
